Child Passenger Safety

CPS and families

The Middle Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Center was established at Meharry Medical College in 2006. It is one of three centers funded by the Tennessee Governor's Highway Safety Office to reduce child deaths and injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes in Tennessee. Last year alone, the center and its satellite locations checked or installed 2,724 child safety seats in 45 counties. The charts below show details about those activities.

CPS and health care providers

Health care providers are an important group when it comes to child passenger safety. Families regard their input, and sometimes they can reach families when no one else can. However, pediatricians and other providers often do not know the particulars of child passenger safety. They rely upon specialists for CPS just as they do other practices.

The Alliance is working with safety partners to broaden knowledge among health care providers. In trainings conducted by Alliance team members in Miami, San Diego, San Antonio, Phoenix, Chicago, and Nashville, 295 health professionals showed significant increases in their child passenger safety knowledge. In the example below, providers showed an overall gain of 20 percent.
